Essays... In hindsight, Don't

I can only think of one reason to justify a essay: The ability to understand and discuss both sides of an arguement or conversation in a pub.

Seriously. Public houses seem to be the great place for civilised discussion. Everyone has had just under two drinks which lubricates sufficently to speak their real thoughs and for everyone else not to hold it against them. I have fond memories of being the only sober on in a pub, due to my age, and remembering discussions about New Labour and Tony B-Liar. If for nothing else I would argue that debating and reading newspapers should be a serious part of the school day, perhaps it can replace the essay on poem I don't like or the Nazi poster whose artist probably didn't conciously mean for any of the points I'm now arguing in his name.

Now I have left school I look at all the thick kids or kids who were naughty. They didn't bother doing a single essay analysing the opening to Baz Lerhman's Romeo and Juilet or whether the Reformation in Medieval England caused something or rather. Their lives are pretty good, most have a trade. I thought dentention was bad but in hindsight, I'll happily have 30 minutes of lunch gone if it means I don't have to do the 3 hour essay at home. I was a bright kid and I didn't see it!

I was a good child at school. By sixth form I was on first name terms with some teachers and, although not something I would ever admit to, I would of liked to remain in contact and freinds with them. Homework was something I didn't mind doing, I didn't want to let down my teacher, but essays I took great exception to.

I used to enjoy a good arguement and was told this came accross in class but to put it on paper was so boring. This means that despite essays being a vital peice of modern coursework, I never put much effort in and therefore really annoyed teachers who felt I was failing myself.

But I hope they will read this post and see that last paragraph was in their P.E.E or as I knew it P.R.J (Point Reason Justification) and that this rant is more or less an essay.

Once again, the teachers who I admired most have won once more.

Buggery.

P.S
On another thought, all of the teachers who I was on first name terms with, ignoring the Physics teachers, were female. Interesting...
